The Microbiome, Dysbiosis & "Leaky Gut"

Surprisingly often, the trail of a health concern leads back to the gut. A balanced microbiome and a strong gut barrier are quietly foundational to how we feel.

Many health issues can be traced, at least in part, to an imbalance in the gut. That's not to say the gut explains everything — but because it sits at the crossroads of digestion, immunity, and even mood, it's one of the most important foundations to get right. Two ideas are worth understanding: the microbiome and the gut barrier.

What Is Dysbiosis?

Your gut is home to trillions of microbes that help digest food, make certain nutrients, train the immune system, and communicate with the brain. When that community becomes unbalanced — too few beneficial microbes, too many opportunistic ones, or too little diversity — it's called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis has been associated with a wide range of concerns, from digestive symptoms to mood, skin, and immune issues. A diverse, well-fed microbiome, by contrast, tends to support a more resilient you.

The Gut Barrier & "Leaky Gut"

The lining of your intestine is only one cell thick, held together by "tight junctions" that act like drawstrings — letting nutrients through while keeping larger particles out. When those junctions loosen, the barrier becomes more permeable. In popular language this is called leaky gut; in research it's called increased intestinal permeability.

In 2000, Dr. Alessio Fasano and his team discovered zonulin, a protein that regulates those tight junctions. When zonulin rises, the junctions loosen and the barrier opens. Elevated permeability has been studied in connection with celiac disease, autoimmune conditions, and other issues. It's worth being clear-eyed here: intestinal permeability is real and measurable, while "leaky gut syndrome" as a stand-alone diagnosis is still an emerging, debated area — not a formal medical diagnosis. It's best understood as one meaningful piece of the picture.

Things That Tip the Balance

What Can Disrupt the Gut

Many everyday factors can nudge the microbiome or gut barrier out of balance. A few that come up often:

Gluten

Gliadin, a component of gluten, can trigger the release of zonulin — temporarily loosening the tight junctions and increasing permeability. This effect is strongest in people with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and appears to a lesser degree in some others. For sensitive individuals, reducing gluten can meaningfully support the gut barrier.

Glyphosate

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, works by blocking the "shikimate pathway" that some bacteria rely on. Because certain beneficial gut microbes (like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) use that pathway, laboratory and animal studies suggest glyphosate residues could disturb the balance of the microbiome. It's important to be balanced: direct human evidence is still limited, and some large analyses find many gut microbes relatively resistant. It remains an active area of research and debate. For those who wish to be cautious, choosing organic when possible and washing produce can reduce dietary exposure.

Other Common Disruptors

Frequent antibiotic use, ultra-processed and low-fiber diets, chronic stress, poor sleep, and excess alcohol can all reduce microbial diversity or strain the gut barrier over time. The good news: the gut is remarkably responsive, and small, consistent changes tend to help it recover.

Because so much can trace back to the gut, it's often one of the first places we look together. The goal isn't fear around food or an endless list of restrictions — it's understanding your body's patterns and rebuilding a strong, balanced foundation, one sustainable step at a time.
